Specialty Products Engineer

The purpose of the role is to support Austrak’s specialty products business to deliver high quality products and meet commercial requirements. This includes sales, engineering, and project management focused on turnout bearer supply and also supporting Austrak’s sleeper business.

The role is based out of Austrak’s head office in Brisbane. Frequent travel to the Rockhampton factory is required. Other domestic travel, including client engagement activities will be required from time to time.

You will be responsible for the following:

Design and Engineering

  • Organize and maintain specifications, drawings, and other technical documents.
  • Perform calculations, design, verification checks and other engineering functions to meet applicable standards and specifications.
  • Be competent in reading and understanding engineering drawings in order to establish the design, scope, and fastening requirements.
  • Design using AutoCAD, and co-ordinate the procurement of new tooling and components.
  • Perform design reviews and create new product drawings liaising with the Design Engineer and Product Innovation Manager
  • Support the set-up, commissioning and handover of new products to factories and ensure delivery is within safety, time, quality and budget requirements.
  • Create or authorize turnout control sheets (production Bill of Materials).
  • Help develop daily production schedules for Rockhampton turnout manufacturing.
  • Help and/or lead in the implementation of various continuous improvement projects (systems, process, factory equipment, product design etc.)

Business Development

  • Prepare / oversee the preparation of scope of work for project tenders.
  • Review the bid strategy, as necessary, in conjunction with the Business Manager.
  • Conduct tender / order reviews to confirm all aspects of the tender program are accurate and identify any potential commercial risks
  • Obtain quotes for special components, fastenings, tooling, labor, testing, freight, and / or modifications required for projects in order to develop accurate cost schedules.

Relationship Management

  • Deliver outstanding external client support and respond to their requests in a timely and productive manner.
  • Become a key interface with the manufacturing facility and Head Office so that the best outcomes are achieved.
  • Champion any non-conformance reports issued as the client / site interface, and ensure they are resolved quickly with the root cause identified and an appropriate preventative measure in place.
  • Provide strategic management of the client during project delivery phase.

General Administration

  • Ensure records and documents are filed in accordance with the relevant filing system.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to the Business Development team.
  • Assist in identifying contract variations and instigate documentation / reporting to the client.
  • Monitor and drive the turnout production systems process to ensure site and head office tasks are closed out.

Personnel & Safety

  • Encourage and support safe working practices throughout the business.
  • Identify individual and team training needs, specify training objectives and recommend training to meet objectives in a documented training plan.
  • Manage the priorities of the Turnout Supervisor and make daily contact to ensure a consistent communication link between head office and site.
  • Engage with production workers when on site and proactively respond to and implement solutions to any problems / ideas.

Quality, OHS & Environment

  • Drive commitment to quality both top-down and bottom-up.
  • Ensure non-conforming products and processes are identified, recorded, investigated, reported; corrective action implemented, and closed out in the Austrak system and with stakeholders.
  • Develop systems and procedures for management of non-conforming product.
  • Undertake turnout quality audits.
  • Carry out root cause investigations for internal and client driven NCR’s.
  • Develop inspection and test plan documentation for new tooling.
  • Manage the closing out of turnout jobs.

Financial Control

  • Monitor progress of jobs against budgets and identify any problems early on.
  • Regularly review and update baseline costs used in estimating.
  • Source multiple quotes for special components, fastenings, tooling, labor, testing, freight, and / or modifications to ensure best pricing is secured.
  • Investigate alternative suppliers for items such as tooling, special components, freight etc. to establish market leading cost rates.

Skills and experience

  • Tertiary education in Engineering.
  • CAD capability an advantage
  • Basic Microsoft Packages including Word, Excel, Project and Outlook
